Use them wisely, throw them away from yourself at the blocked doors and watch a yt walkthrough.
HL1's Tentacles were almost harmless so long as you held crouch(walking, i.e. holding Shift, also worked as long as you didn't press more than one movement key at once; e.g. W + A or D), and didn't touch/bump into a vertical wall(for some reason GoldSrc seemed to treat that as 'making a really loud noise'). OTOH, I kind of feel like they seemed more 'alive'. They were 'idle' a lot more, and that let them show off a little personality as a creature(getting 'bored', 'looking' around, 'yawning'(roaring?), idly pecking at whatever's in front of them without being in full-on 'alert mode'), being one of the very few aliens you could properly 'observe' without being charged/shot/spit at.
