How do you install the free/mod version?

So I've had the retail version for a bit now and I've been trying to get the mod version just for the heck of it but I'm not sure how, I know you get it on the official page but I'm fairly new to modding, and I've only modded on the workshop or gotten mods that were easy to download like Brutal Half-Life, I'm also confused by the fact that that are like 20 different pages to download the mod and I'm not sure which one is the best, I've also tried looking it up but all videos I've seen are like 4 years old, If anyone can provide a link to a recent guide or video that shows how to install the mod I would VERY appreciate.

You need to download it from https://www.blackmesasource.com/ , load source sdk 2007 in tools of steam

which website should I download it from though? moddb, gamershell, gamesfront, ect. I dont know which one to download it from

As far as I'm concerned, ModDB is the way to go.

The torrent and zip files both contain all the game files, just delivered by differrent methods. Think FedEx versus postal system.

what way do I open the file once I've downloaded it?
