I found they served an actual game-design purpose, which is to prevent you from spamming Hivehand (the unlimited-ammo ranged alien weapon). Normally, you can unleash a ton of these on an open map and they will seek out and kill various enemies from a safe distance. Protozoans attract the hornets without getting destroyed by them, so you need to get rid of them first if you want to use this strategy.
