IMO the game can be very depressing at times, and gore is not uncommon.
I always considered the half life games "action-horror" games, action primary, horror secondary.
If you mean horror as in jumping out of your seat nerve racking ... No, Black Mesa is not. By Original design I think they tried to make Half-Life more neutral, sci-fi horror with an Element of subtle comedy or humor to keep the game innocent, user friendly. Black Mesa isn't much different, just modern.
Remember, this comes from the 1990's of gaming when humor kinda buffered these games. To constantly remind players it's not real, it's fake, fictional. just like they did with movies.
Hello, I suggest watching some gameplay videos available on the internet, just to see if you could handle the game's environment and gameplay. Not sure how squeamish you are but if you have a chance to watch some videos, it might help you decide.
So what is horrific from any individuals point of view really depends on their level of empathy doesn't it?
Performing illegal surgeries on people against their will, deploying their security garrison to exterminate everyone on site. That's horrific, but not necessarily scary. :)
