playing for the first time, with or without mods

asking bc i've seen alot of really, great QoL as well as heavy overhaul mods that change and improve things like choreography for NPCs, map fixes and changes, and i'm not sure if i should stick with vanilla until i finish or install these mods first for the optimal experience

You should absolutely use the fix mods like improved choreo.

Personally I'd recommend playing vanilla, though smaller fixes might be alright!

I'd go for the HD textures for sure, BMCE (which adds in different types of NPCs than just scientists and security guards) ,the Definitive OAR uncut and all the chapter overhauls.

BMCE is a nightmare to install, and not something you should ever recommend to new players unless you're willing to be tech support for them.

I didn't find it very hard to install. The instructions were quite clear. Maybe there is an issue I'm not aware of?

I'd go with Vanilla first then after finishing the game. I'll go again but with mods.

Go vanilla first with anything (unless the game literally won't run without them) the first time.

Then add a couple here and there, try a few missions, and see if there are more mods you'd like. Maybe add some more, before going totally crazy with it.
Tho my only comparisons are Skyrim and FONV for hella modding, I'm not sure how many mods there are for this game yet. Will def look into it all once I finish my Virgin Vanilla run
