How to exit the Blast Pit?

I just killed the big tentacle monster, climbed down the rocket tube, picked up the .357 Magnum -- and now I don't seem to be able to exit the room. How do I get out? There's a door that won't open, a wooden section of the wall that won't break down, and some debris at the bottom of the water that doesn't seem to be of any use. (I can pick up some broken ladder rungs, but don't see anywhere to place them)

Is this a puzzle, or am I just not seeing an obvious exit?

You need to dive into the water.

After you dive down into the water, if you come back up on the outer side of the cone, there's a place on one side where you can get out.
