Flipping the X axis is quite unusual.
oh no, can't believe how stupid i've become in my old age--i want to invert the Y axis!!

Thanks for the reply. I was gonna try that originally but saw a couple of comments that it would slow things down (?).
It probably is really the better/simpler way to do it, but before you posted I had gone
to Nexus and found a mod by Kryssism for inverting the Y . It' s a little more complicated but
everything is working fine now.
