Performance Issues
Last year this game ran like butter for me and it runs really poor now. Even on the lowest settings I dip to 30-40 fps.

What happened?

Do the following.

Restart your computer.

Then disable the following;
In Options, Video, Advanced...
set Dynamic Shadow Quality to DISABLE
set Cascade Shadow Map to DISABLE
set Dynamic Light Quality to VERY LOW
set Antialiasing Mode to NONE

Under the Black Mesa tab .. Uncheck God Rays

Also Decrease your resolution

This is new lighting and rays have are so bad optimithation. In some places i have a fall FPS. Especially in teleport at Lambda complex before get to Xen, still lags so much and fighting with Controllers its quite difficult. In 2012 version i've dont had a fall FPS so much. I hope devs will fix it. Please ^^

I did all but lowering the resolution because I'm using fullscreen and don't want the game to be super blurry. It runs better but it still dips hard. In outdoor areas the fps is usually around 50-60 and whenever there's an explosion it drops to 30-40. There must be something going on. I used to play with mostly high settings and rarely dipped below 60.

its probably a mix between the new unoptimized lighting and your cpu.. seriously who builds a pc with a gtx 1080 and a fx cpu? talk about a bottleneck.

you should seriously consider upgrading your cpu.. your gtx 1080 is capable of ALOT more. but your cpu is holding it back.

1. Have you made any (major) changes to your PC since the last time (January) you played the game?
2. Have you tested other Source engine-based games to see if they also perform worse?
3. Do you believe that your current gpu driver may be badly configured? in this case, use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller - do a google search for it) to properly get rid of the corrupt files. After that, you can safely install the driver you want.
3.1. Are you using one of the most recent drivers for your gpu? they're known to cause framerate / performance issues in certain games. (hint: green team is optimizing their new drivers for their shiny RTX series) My suggestion is to download an older version (398.36 or 398.11) and test the game again.

Edit:
User @FEARGASM is also correct. That cpu isn't good for your gtx 1080.

Why on earth would you pair an AMD FX chip with a GTX 1080? That's like trying to fly a plane with a large parachute open on the back, wondering why you're going so slow at full throttle.

I plan on upgrading but I haven't been able to buy everything I need at once. I put the 1080 in because my old GPU was dying.

Since the last time I played I've swapped out my hard drive for a new one and I've put in my 1080.

Other source games perform the same way they always have.

I have no reason to suspect my gpu is badly configured as everything else works fine.

I'm using the most recent drivers from geforce experience.
