Black Mesa

Black Mesa

A criticism about the marines.
In Half life 1, the marines appearances corresponded with their gameplay role which made them easily identifiable. This would later be carried over to half life 2 and so on. In black mesa, their appearance and role just depends. Shotgunners in half life and half life 2 had a unique appearance to make them easily identifiable so you could watch yourself out more. In this game, there appearance just goes. Why not have the balaclava soldiers? Don't tell me "oh, this isn't a valve game, it's a fan's vision of half life". Valve aren't the only ones that design the enemies like that. Doom did it, system shock 1-2 did it, etc. it's like that for a lot of games. Valve acknowledge this mistake when half life 2 first released and made a new skin for the shotgunners for episode 2 and-you know the rest. I know I said things about this game before but please take this criticism to heart. Criticism is meant to be used to improve and learn from your mistakes. Not be dismissed like strolling by a dead rat on a side walk. You use it all the time, why not this?

Why are people still making the mistake of calling the HECU Marines even though they are very clearly a joint task force?

Seeing as how their are paratroopers from both the 82nd and 173rd airborn (Red Berets) and 75th airborn (Black Berets at the time HL1 was made) running around and no U.S. Marine unit has ever issued berets to my knowlage.

I know in Opfor Shepard was a Marine, but he was one man of many we even see in his sqaud at the start of the game an Army Ranger who wore black berets at the time.

Further more the Marines do not have medics, they have Navy coremen but the HECU clearly say they are medics, once again this implies Army or Air force.

That pretty clearly is just a research failure on the part of the original devs. The HECU guys are supposed to be a non-existant USMC black ops unit.

Says who?

What interview is there that I can go look at that says that?

what dev journal?

What podcast?

Which games manual?

All I have found on the subject is a fan made wiki which does not state any of its sources.

Mean no disrepect but so far the only things I have seen is the fact that Sheprard just so happenes to have been a Marine and that they tend to fly in O-22's, which means nothing as they are just plains that anyone can get if they really wanted them the only reason the Army does not use them in the real world is that they tend to kill their occupants unlike Blackhawks and Chinooks which are fairly safe and have been for decades.

It's a video game, not a documentary. Some artistic license is implied.

Yes,it would be nice to have those balaclava guys. Not only it gives you a clear indication of what enemy you're fighting against but it also adding more enemy visual types therefore you're not so easily burning out by fighting the same three soldier types. Also it gives me a feeling that you're killing non-conventional black ops force rather than simple marines because no one ever try to completly hide their face in normal armed conflict.Maybe we will get HECU classic models in workshop like Half-Life 1 classic weapons mode that is in development eventually.

The issue with the HECU is that adding new variants (which is what would be required in order to differentiate gameplay roles visually) is not really an option for us. There's no real way to do it with the existing models, because they weren't set up for that.

We don't have the original model source files for them. We would have to redo their models entirely from scratch, which is a pretty major undertaking. This is a pretty recurring issue throughout this project - and is the nature of the beast because the game originally started out as a fan mod project spanning a huge amount of time and lots of long-gone team members. Before going retail, unfortunately, the team were not very strict or careful about saving source files to our central repository, which bites us in the behind on many occasions. But alas, we persist. Nowadays we are very careful, but this doesn't help us at all if we want to work on older stuff.

Having something like that would be on my ideal checklist for the game too. But it's dependent on time and where we decide to invest resources, post-Xen. I doubt it will happen, honestly.

Though there are some oddities with it, the zombie grunt model is already much higher quality than the base grunt's. Here's a comparison: https://imgur.com/ZSFFT4n

Could probably be used as a base for a new grunt model since a lot of the work's already been done, if that's something worth pursuing

I'm going to die if we don't get turrets in mutiplayer.

EDIT: Wow I just re-read that and every other word is Army Soldier Army Soldier only thing marine mentioned is murphy's law.

Its not only looking as if the HECU is a joint ops unit but the majority is in fact from the army and Corperal Shepard is from the minority.

The Nova Prospekt guards in Half Life 2 were also very similar, as the only difference are their eyes.
