As for the benefits, there are a number of small things. First, things you make and sell in your store don't lose the % cut you would lose selling it on the competing platforms. In the reverse as well products made by competitors listed on your store give you a cut you otherwise wouldn't get. Digital sales do not cost you the money you would spend printing a physical copy. Finally, the features of the platform that you can include during development offer bonuses to sales (iirc?) and fans.
Digital distribution is a slow burn. Over time the buffs to your products and the shaving of costs add up, but IMO the biggest reason to make one is the simplest.
Your competitors are making money off of your AAA games. You just gonna lie down and take that?
EDIT: Maybe I was remembering a mod, there does not seem to be any bonuses to your product from digital distribution in the vanilla game.
