When you have a subsidiary, you can make them do marketing, support, porting. You can do that by selecting that subsidiary in the assigning window.
You can make them develop software also. Just check their specialized software from their company page (by clicking "Details"), and as normally open the design window, fill it out and set the team as that subsidiary. You will see when it will be released in the details page.
Don't forget to deposit some money to that subsidiary.
I still can't make a company a subsidiary. Get an error message - don't recall exactly what it says (not at the PC at the moment) but basically only choice is buyout. Even though I have $100+ million bucks and can outright buy them, will not let me make them a subsidiary.
