Worked it out; build a room underground and build stairs/elevator to surface.

On a useful sidenote (if you haven't found out already):
If you have marked an elevator and change the level, you will see a beam manating from that elevator, which shows you where you have to place the elevator exit on this level in order to connect it to the marked elvator.

Found this to be especially helpful in the subterranean levels

If you make frequent use of your basement your lights will wear out in no time though.
For that reason I only use basements for servers/printers.
