Release Software on your own OS vs popular OS
I have my own OS and it's 3rd most popular OS by active users.
Should I keep creating software to my own OS, even when they barely sell but give more legitimacy and uniqueness for my OS?
For the record I can afford to barely sell any copies, I'd like to bolster the position and future of my OS.

My OS is currently the third in the family and my market recognition for OS is the green happy face.
I'd prefer to keep all software on my OS to attract more users instead of going in for fast cash on #1 OS by porting my software to it.
It's year 1998, I got about 1mil fans, I have seemingly the best recognition one can get on OS field, I have max business reputation and my OS itself in question reviewed well and its quality is 'Great'.

Perhaps marketing is where my issue lies.
I have about 20 marketers all maxed working 8am to 5pm and they are divided in two teams so their vacations won't overlap.
My company's networth is 830mil.

Should I keep pumping software solely to my own OS in hopes of later OS iterations in the family will fare better?
Is the marketing side of my business holding me down?

This topic got buried, probably too many paragraphs for people to go through.

I did get a few helpful replies on /r/SoftwareInc, though.

The greater recognition you have in the OS market, the more popular it'll be.

Also buying out competition works.

You always gotta think about your competition: what features do their OS have that yours doesn't? What sets your OS apart? Whenever you make a product - no matter what it is - always ensure innovation is as close to 100% as possible, but don't be a dummy and check EVERY box just because you can. It will cripple you in the future because 1) your product will take a longer time to design + code + release 2) it will leave you with very few options in the future to innovate and expand on sequels.

So, check your competition, does your OS have more features than theirs? If it doesn't, release a sequel OS that has their features and a little bit extra, to get you that 100% innovation. Finally, always try your best to make products that other products rely on (visual editor, audio editor, game engine, OS) as good as possible. An Outstanding OS unlocks more features for things that rely on it compared to an OS that is just Great.

Following this advice, you'll easily become the #1 OS and putting all your software into your own OS and never releasing to competitors OS will ensure they die out whilst you jump ahead. Unless you get unlucky and your competition releases a fantastic OS that blows yours out of the water.

Always innovate, always stay in the lead, show no mercy and crush your enemies (I mean competitors). You could also try buying out competitors, if it doesn't cost too much. Or buying their IPs. Goodluck, friendo.

What I often do (If I have the money for it) is create an OS earlier that's entirely free and marketed to death. This massively increases fans and market recognition (and also trains your employees).

But is a huge money sink. It will pay off though when you release your priced OS later in the game.

This also works with other software types.
