Cool guy.
I agree.
Save Game...? Where is the Save Game option???
No Save Game option here. Why? Well, this is not your usual game for all the family. This is a game for very hard, hard gamers.
Ok Hard Gamers, I will uninstall Exanima, but, really, I´m proud to sponsor your leisure with my humble 12.74€.
Im not a hard gamer and i will be getting this next week, i think far too many players are looking at it as they play present rpg/dungeon crawlers.
As for saving etc , its early access ^^, anything can happen for future updates.
The first part of what you describe is the same really in any dungeon crawler, explore and investigate.
Back in 1998 i played a game called Die by the sword, it was like nothing before and was so fresh (mechanics/combatwise) but after a few hours getting used to it, i was well into it.
This is whats needed time for change.
Watch some of the excellent videos Vold has made.
You can't generalize.
Some zombies will not attack you unless you provoke them (by approaching them in combat mode, by not giving them enough space, you name it).
Other zombies will be aggressive and attack on sight.
Others will pretend to be friendly and only attack you when you are vulnerable (back exposed, attacked by another zombie...).
Zombies also have memory. If you encounter a particular zombie once don't fight him, he will remember how you behaved around him (did you stare at him for a while? did you ignore him completely etc). Next time you meet (if there is a next time), his behavior towards you will take those memories into consideration. It's currently possible to make a zombie trust you completely and, in the future, there will be consequences for that (the zombie may aid you in combat for instance).
My mistake was trying to speak with a zombie by clicking on him. He obviously didn´t feel confortable with that behaviour. And perhaps not interested on chatting, too.
Other than that, i would tell you make your mind to not saving anytime soon. Maybe a modder is able to come up with it sometime in the future, but the dev is not going to provide that feature. It is not to please hardcore games, it is not just for the sake of making different game. It is because the whole dead concept plays an vital role on the events that unfold on ExAnima and continue on SG. There are some hints in the lore.
If dev is not going to provide that feature, then I will uninstall EA waiting for a less intransigent modder who helps casual gamers like me.
Lore is an important thing, but people who generously gave their money for an Early Access title are not important? Disregarding them in the name of lore concepts does not seem to be a fair idea. Save option don´t hurt the lore if you don´t want to, because it is an option. Ruin my game experience should be my own decision, because, although I am a kidergarten level gamer, I am still an adult and I should have the right to play my games as I want.
It wouldn´t be nonsensical to say: "music is an important lore concept, so, you can´t turn off the sound." or "for lore (not technical) reasons you can only play this game with ATI Graphic Cards."?
True, even this kind of fanatical decissions has its audience and so I wish them luck with their new projects, but, of course, I will not fund any other game from Bare Mettle.
It should all make a bit more sense when we add the permanent save point and how well you do translates into your starting conditions for the less linear and larger second part.
Also it's really important that you treat the early game more like a survival experience and avoid combat at least until you're decently geared. It's even quite possible to complete the game without ever fighting anyone. The game is unforgiving but it's basically as hard as you make it.
