So how do I pick up the %$#@ torch?
Yes, I've read the quick-start guide. Yes, I've looked at all the keymappings. Yes, I've clicked/dragged in every combination. I don't want to be stopped in the first room by this "puzzle".

If you can't figure how to pick up the torch then this game is obviously not for you

No, seriously, he is right. I had exactly the same problem and after 15-20 minutes I was able to pick the torch. Then, I tried to stack up boxes (20 minutes and no luck). After that, I found an iron rod. Armed and confident I tried some swings, and breaking some barrels with the rod. No success. Perhaps the barrels are not intended for that. Or perhaps I can´t even hit a barrel totally motionless. But I felt brillant when I figured how to open the door in less than two minutes. Corridors. Open another door. A zombi. He seems friendly. Let´s try to speak with poor undead. He murdered me in less than 15 seconds while I was playing baseball with the rod like a drunk. Ok, zombies are not friendly. Next time I will save the game before opening doors.
Save Game...? Where is the Save Game option???
No Save Game option here. Why? Well, this is not your usual game for all the family. This is a game for very hard, hard gamers.
Ok Hard Gamers, I will uninstall Exanima, but, really, I´m proud to sponsor your leisure with my humble 12.74€.

Im not a hard gamer and i will be getting this next week, i think far too many players are looking at it as they play present rpg/dungeon crawlers.
As for saving etc , its early access ^^, anything can happen for future updates.
The first part of what you describe is the same really in any dungeon crawler, explore and investigate.

Back in 1998 i played a game called Die by the sword, it was like nothing before and was so fresh (mechanics/combatwise) but after a few hours getting used to it, i was well into it.

This is whats needed time for change.

Watch some of the excellent videos Vold has made.

Ok, zombies are not friendly.

You can't generalize.

Some zombies will not attack you unless you provoke them (by approaching them in combat mode, by not giving them enough space, you name it).

Other zombies will be aggressive and attack on sight.

Others will pretend to be friendly and only attack you when you are vulnerable (back exposed, attacked by another zombie...).

Zombies also have memory. If you encounter a particular zombie once don't fight him, he will remember how you behaved around him (did you stare at him for a while? did you ignore him completely etc). Next time you meet (if there is a next time), his behavior towards you will take those memories into consideration. It's currently possible to make a zombie trust you completely and, in the future, there will be consequences for that (the zombie may aid you in combat for instance).

Thanks!
My mistake was trying to speak with a zombie by clicking on him. He obviously didn´t feel confortable with that behaviour. And perhaps not interested on chatting, too.

Yeah, since the character's head follows the cursor if you aim on him, that's a bit like you were staring him. And some undead don't like that.

Other than that, i would tell you make your mind to not saving anytime soon. Maybe a modder is able to come up with it sometime in the future, but the dev is not going to provide that feature. It is not to please hardcore games, it is not just for the sake of making different game. It is because the whole dead concept plays an vital role on the events that unfold on ExAnima and continue on SG. There are some hints in the lore.

Thanks for the information and the bad news (for me).
If dev is not going to provide that feature, then I will uninstall EA waiting for a less intransigent modder who helps casual gamers like me.
Lore is an important thing, but people who generously gave their money for an Early Access title are not important? Disregarding them in the name of lore concepts does not seem to be a fair idea. Save option don´t hurt the lore if you don´t want to, because it is an option. Ruin my game experience should be my own decision, because, although I am a kidergarten level gamer, I am still an adult and I should have the right to play my games as I want.
It wouldn´t be nonsensical to say: "music is an important lore concept, so, you can´t turn off the sound." or "for lore (not technical) reasons you can only play this game with ATI Graphic Cards."?
True, even this kind of fanatical decissions has its audience and so I wish them luck with their new projects, but, of course, I will not fund any other game from Bare Mettle.

I am sorry what the game currently offers doesn't appeal you enough to surpass what you don't like. But honestly, i don't share your view in that not implementing a saving feature would be unfair for casuals. In the case of this game it would be the other way around, because the devs have always stated saving wouldn't be a thing. Since minute 1. Do otherwise would be to betray the user base. I completely disagree with your latest points too, it is a perfectly legit decision and it is justified, and even if it weren't it is their game at the end of the day. Trust me, they care much more about accomplish the vision they had since child, than to appeal to a wide audience. To me that's something daring but also brave and have a ton value on a world that all what matters is sell more and more.
Bare Mettle  [developer] May 3, 2015 @ 9:11am
As far as Exanima is concerned it has nothing to do with lore really but we do think that it's fundamental for the game (and any RPG) that everything you do is of consequence and you can't just reload your game if you don't like how it turned out. With loading, the game would be entirely devoid of tension and meaning. Really, what's the point of a game if you can't lose?

It should all make a bit more sense when we add the permanent save point and how well you do translates into your starting conditions for the less linear and larger second part.

Also it's really important that you treat the early game more like a survival experience and avoid combat at least until you're decently geared. It's even quite possible to complete the game without ever fighting anyone. The game is unforgiving but it's basically as hard as you make it.
