Understanding Saves & Checkpoints
Excuse my ignorance, I've only had the game a day. I just wanted to better understand the save/checkpoint system. My questions:

Is my character saved when I quit the game?

Does the game currently give any indication of when it is saving a checkpoint?

Is there/will there be a feature that will allow us to know the timestamp of our last character save/checkpoint?

Thanks!

1. Yes, if you are alive and quit the game, you will continue from the very same place.

2. No, there are not.

3. I kinda doubt that.

My understanding is that if you have "early checkpoints" enabled in the game's options menu, your progress will be saved when you transition between dungeon levels *for the first time*(no way to re-use the checkpoint). If you don't have them enabled, the hard save will occur when you transition between 3rd and 4th levels of the dungeon.

There are a total of 4 checkpoints:

1º Mid lvl1, just after you unlock the door south of the landing zone.
2º End of lvl 1.
3º End of lvl 2.
4º End of lvl 3: the only one mandatory, the portal.

That's about it, there wont be more checkpoints in the remaining levels.

Unless you die you can always return to exactly where you were, you can safely hit Alt+F4 at any point. You can also start as many new games as you like and continue any on of them.

The game doesn't tell you when you've reached a checkpoint. The checkpoints are at the end of each map, except the first one which is triggered when you cross the locked door leading out of the starting area of the first map.

After triggering a checkpoint you will be able to continue from that point if you die. For the checkpoints at the end of the map, you can also backtrack and do things you might have missed then trigger the checkpoint again. You can't lose a checkpoint save, only replace it with a new one.

Awesome - thanks, folks!

In my experience this isn't the case, I thought it worked how Bare Mettle said, so trusting this I went from level 5 the crossroads to level 6 with the golems. I took some heavy damage early on from the knights and wanted to restart at that point in the level. So I let them kill me. I then got booted all the way back to the start of level 4. Ruining my save game. Honestly the thought of having to crawl through both labyrinths of level 4 and 5 to get back to the point I was at is too much for me to even bother, I'll just start a new one. I wish the devs would give more clarity about the saves so I don't get trashed for no good reason.

Sorry that happened to you.
I noticed Bare Mettles' quote was from January of 2016. It may have been that in that time there were only four levels. I cannot say for sure. I do know that comment #2 above is accurate.

Everything in that developer quote is correct except the fact that there are no checkpoints after the portal. (In 2016 we didn't have more levels after that so at the time of writing that information was accurate.)

@David Whitefang you can update a checkpoint save but only if you die. When you respawn after death (let's say at the portal), you can choose to go back instead of entering the portal right away. The checkpoint will be updated with any new progress you make when you finally do enter the portal. (But you can't go to level 4 and return back to save the game. You have to die.)

Ah! I understand. I have tried the 'return back' method and it did not work.
Thanks for explaining it to me.

May i suggest to add a checkpoint after character creation, recreating the character for new players doesnt really add a challenge.

Update: Ah just figured it saves the character in the creation process, though i would have to start a new and adjust all settings again cause it did only show begin and not continue in main menu.
