Exanima

Exanima

Lanterns, please.
As much as game goes in depth in terms of handling player's equipment in a reasonably realistic way it still falls for a mostly fantasy trope of using torches for light. Having a lantern would be so much better.

Yeah, there's not much of an excuse about historical accuracy if there's magical and oil lamps in the arena.

I don't think that was ever the excuse, but come to think of it I don't know what the reason is. Possibly something lore-wise, or they might add some in the future, who knows. I'm perfectly happy with a torch though, since afaik a lantern light would be very weak.

I'd love to see a directional lantern that lights further than the torch does, the catch being it leaves you open to being attacked from behind. Or even a thaumaturgy binding that creates a light source that follows you in the upcoming force thaumaturgy. Just more options in general that gives the player more agency to how they approach the game

A strong lantern would be cool, but I don't know how it might work. As for such a binding, that'd come in light thaumaturgy for sure, and yeah, that'll be really nice!

Lantern light would be plenty bright, and most importantly - lanterns don't make you actually blind in the darkness. Like torches do. Ever tried holding up a torch in front of you at night?
All I'm saying is - there's already plenty of media that completely misunderstands torches. This game took a realistic approach with things many others get wrong, or simply ignore. This is an opportunity to get lighting up dark places right. If you wanted to see in the dark before electricity was invented - you used a lantern, a candle, a rush light. Nobody would ever use a torch.

That’s very interesting. As I said, I’m really not in the know with that stuff specifically so I’ll have to take your word for it, though I can at least see how it does make sense that the brightness of the torch would make you completely unable to see through the darkness.

Torches work fine so long as you don't hold them in front of you (which indeed blinds you). They were used (and still are) though not as commonly as in fantasy. Mostly though in the context of an isometric style game they offer great visibility without forcing the character into an awkward pose.

the real question is, in the world of exanima what is the economic value of a torch? in 5 floors of dungeon I met only one against dozens of swords, armor and gems ... if I can get out of this dungeon and put it up for sale I will buy a castle more surrounding lands. :P
