Seems really weird to have one of the most common interact keys for pixel games just hardclose the game for no reason

So I have played all the way up to the point where Durmes (spelling) takes over the PC and closes the game , but I cannot figure out if there is more to do and how I should do it. Jimmy mentions finding a different way to open the locked door in the church , but I can't figure out how to do that. Anything I've done to try and prevent Carl getting stuck on the stairs has failed since doing things before that event does nothing and when it happens ...
