What are Mantle Layers?

I keep having to look at the wiki for where to find resources, and a lot say they're found on the mantle layers. Are the mantle layers just the surface, or are they deep caves?

Mantle is what surrounds the surface and it goes deep almost until the core, so basically the whole ground under your feet.

In case of our planet Earth the mantle is the largest layer with about 84% of the Earths volume.

In astroneer you just have to look for the resources until you find them. Press F1 and go on top left on Planets, than read there what it says about different gases and resources that can be found there.
