How do I ACTUALLY use the xenobiology lab?

Google was absolutely worthless. It was only able to pull up 2 websites that actually tried to explain how to use it, except that one website just copy/pasted the text from the other one. I ♥♥♥♥ you not. It was exactly the same, word for word.

All they said was "put the oxygenator in and give it power, then you can interact with the datapad to get missions"

Except that's a complete lie. The datapad doesn't offer missions. It's just a log book.

So how is it ACTUALLY used?
