Multiplayer with Xbox game pass and Steam

A friend got the xbox game pass in his computer and i own astroneer in steam and since in the astroneer from the game pass doesn't display a list of steam friends to join, is there a way for me to play with him without using a server since setting up a server is difficult and i don't want to pay to rent a server?
