Signs
Signs... several times ive wandered the caves of Sylva thinking how great it would be to be able to place signs for various notes and such things.

2 kinds of signs are suggested:

First are Symbol Signs which are signs with a physical appearance related to in game objects like the ore icons and directional arrows. the current way-markers are insufficient as they dont really help with navigation underground and lack artistic appeal for base decoration.

Second, id recommend a text form sign. This could be advanced like how signs can use encoding similar to Minecraft or simple where signs simply allow the player to add a few words describing something similar to how they work in Terraria which when moused over display the written text contained within.

Finally and i think this would help alleviate clutter in the crafting tools as the number of signs would add to a rather long existing list... a new small printer which creates "Decorations" of which signs should be apart of, simply named the "Decoration Printer" or "Sign Printer" if there are no plans to add decoration objects other than signs.

in any case i know why the current NAV markers are the way they are... but they dont work for you when underground and a different item type such as signposts would be neat. you could even simply add one new hologram projector which can project symbols or texts and even other unlockable images based on achievments and such... this would only add a single new item but allow its internal UI to select what it displays.

I usually trace arrows with the terrain tool... such a primitive way.

Also: beacon could offer a resource icon, not only a color, maybe cycled via G key. So you place a beacon next to a Graphite deposit for later extraction.

Signs are always a great and very useful addition to games like this.

I like the idea. Maybe this could be implemented with beacons in a way that would also make them more useful with automation. The beacon's user interface could be similar to that used for rail stations, allowing to configure its mode of operation:
  • Two modes of operation, i.e. reactions to being triggered:
    1. cycle through a series of colors or symbols (or make that even two modes: one for cycling through symbols and one for cycling through background colors of the current symbol)
    2. toggle the beacon on and off
  • Series for cycle mode:
    • colors
    • numbers (at least values 0 to 9, as symbols like on a six-sided die, or for example like this: *, **, ***, ****, I, I*, I**, I***, I****, II)
    • resource symbols
    • perhaps other symbols (emoji, arrows etc.)

i like this. we could combine a lock to the "device" that only the user and by default the "world host" can override. simply attach the device to any player-built object similarly to how beacons work when anchoring to the ground and engage the lock. optionally this device should be able to project a sign that is rendered when any player is in close proximity similar to how the icons for where you respawn point is within the game "Grounded" are only visible when a player is within proximity so as to limit the beacon clutter common in both Grounded & Astroneer.

this should also prevent automatic extraction of materials from storage as well as unauthorized users from manually taking materials intended for reserve. but if you want automated devices to retain functionality... you could have checkbox in the interface to configure for that as well.

i totally feel your pain on this front.
