I usually trace arrows with the terrain tool... such a primitive way.
Also: beacon could offer a resource icon, not only a color, maybe cycled via G key. So you place a beacon next to a Graphite deposit for later extraction.
Signs are always a great and very useful addition to games like this.

And I use a lot of signs and keep a journal on myself there haha
this should also prevent automatic extraction of materials from storage as well as unauthorized users from manually taking materials intended for reserve. but if you want automated devices to retain functionality... you could have checkbox in the interface to configure for that as well.
i totally feel your pain on this front.
