If whatever individual who's doing game design at SE was capable or interested in doing that, half the brokenly overpowered crap in Astro today wouldn't be there, mini RTG included. The only reason it was put in was probably they skimmed the forums, saw a bunch of new players crying about how they don't have infinite power at all times, and said hey "the community" wants this so let's put it in. At no point, I'm absolutely positive, did they ever play the game themselves, thought hey we need such and such an item in this niche, let's design it up. There's no playtesting, there's no intelligent design decision being made here. It's pandering to whatever crap suggestion they see most often on their social media skimming.
That's how game design is done these days, in this industry. "Designers" don't actually play the game, much less do any rigorous playtesting, they skim social media and just put in whatever stupid thing a critical mass of social media posters say they want.
Besides all that the QT RTG does require you to complete missions to get unless you'd like to try finding one on wrecks and tell the missions board to bugger off.
As for the normal RTG it's not all that over powered. Take into consideration the power cost to run all the machines. the Atmospheric condenser takes 20 units to operate efficiently.
More so you calling the RTG's overpowered because they have no resource cost or otherwise is just rather pointless because they take one of the most expensive resource types in the game which requires you to set up shop on at least 4 planets. Sylva (obvious starting planet), Callidor for the tungsten, Glacio for the titanium, and Atrox for the Helium so as to make the Nano Carbon Alloy.
Thus you saying that the infinite power production items are over powered is a false statement imo. They are within the realm of being reasonably over powered. (Out right over powered for this game would be something that produces 21 units of power and fits into a single slot area. the QT RTGs from the missions board are limited to how many missions the devs have put in. You can find them RARELY on wrecks (i've gone over several wrecks already and not found the first one so are they out right over powered? or are they within the realm of being reasonable over powered? To me they are within the realm of being reasonably overpowered.
Besides all that you don't have to use the RTGs. The devs listen to their community (unlike many of the triple A devs) and they are adding in more items. if you don't like something in the game either A: don't bother using it/messing with it. B: Don't bother playing the game. or C: get over it and just enjoy the game.
