Soil containers
I think it would be useful to have a medium and large soil containers. They would be like the medium and large storage respectively. The could have ports on them too to allow the player to empty canisters of soil into them and also transfer the soil back into canisters. They should probably require some glass and compound/Aluminum to make. What do you guys think?

The question is how would you collect into them? That seems not particularly important, but think about it. You would need some kind of wheeled follow-behind cart to carry a tier 2 soil container. That's easy enough, a tractor trailer could do the trick. But you can't tug those behind you in the game as it stands now. Likewise, you would also need some kind of soil hose to carry the soil from your deform tool to the medium/large soil canister.

I'd love to have a big soil canister too, but I'm afraid the game doesn't support it quite yet.

However, as you suggested, one simple-ish way you could have one is to simply stick a tier 1 socket onto the top of it, and allow me to dump soil from backpack soil canisters into it. It would work in exactly the same way as the soil centrifuge deposit functionality, but obviously without any of the resource extraction aspect to it. Just a big ol' tank you deposit soil into.

To make it desirable vs. crafting ten small ones could be having it very simply have 10x the soil capacity of a small one. And comparative ease of use and transportation.

I'd be in favour of them taking resin and glass, since that would follow the pattern of small to medium recipes of equipment of the same kind. The small takes resin to make, so you add glass on top of that and done.

The large drill heads currently collect resources themselves, but yeah this idea could be way useful for tractor drill trains.

The medium and large canisters would attach to stuff like the medium and large storage do. You would be able to put them on rovers and platforms like the other modules.

Using glass and resin is a good idea. It would basically be a canister but bigger, so it would be made of the same stuff as the canister, just more of it.

These would be a nice improvement for mining. Hauling tons of canisters around and swapping them out can be a bit of a pain.

Unless vehicle drills start collecting soil again, it's still not clear how you'd actually fill these.

They could have slots on them that you can attach canisters to. One slot would empty soil from the canister to the tank. The other slot would empty soil from the tank into a canister.

That seems functionally very similar to filling large and medium storage with canisters, although it would be an aesthetic and convenience improvement. Provided the centrifuge was capable of accessing it directly, of course.

Precisely. I don't see why it wouldn't. Put it on one of the side slots of the large platform the centrifuge is on and the centrifuge draws from it directly. Other than that, you might slightly tweak the centrifuge model to have a tier 2 socket somewhere on it.

Hey, maybe it could do double duty as a gas storage tank.

I'm not sure if they ever intend to merge the canisters and the gas flasks, but maybe. At any rate it'll most likely be used for storing liquids if that becomes a thing.

Kinda like how canisters used to be used to hold Hydrazine as well as soil.

Were canisters ever used to hold hydrazine? As I recall, hydrazine nuggets, even though they shared the same canister model, were their own thing and did not require empty canisters to be created. Which, maybe, they could've done.

However, that would leave the player with mountains of spent hydrazine canisters to deal with on top of everything else. I'm skeptical as to how interesting that would've been as gameplay.
I'm pretty sure that back in early access there was a brief time when you needed to make canisters and then you could fill them with Hydrazine or soil.

Or a hose could be added that could be pulled out of the centrifuge (kinda like a power cable) and attached to a tank to pull out soil and put it in the centrifuge.
