Can't rebind the Tab key, can rebind the Esc key

Was trying to bind Backpack to Tab and Catalogue to something else.

I first put Catalogue on a spare mouse button to clear it from Tab.

Then clicked Backpack to rebind to Tab, but pressed the Tab key and nothing happened - the game wouldn't accept it as input.

Then tried to re-set it as before (Catalogue on Tab, Backpack on Q), but the same thing happened when trying to re-bind to Catalogue, so had completely lost use of the Tab key for any purpose.

Tried a few other things, but while trying to back out of a keybind I hit Esc, and Backpack became bound to Esc.

Forgetting that Esc is important for other reasons (!) I backed out of the config menu and back to the game.

Was now in a position where I couldn't enter the system menu to change the bindings again or exit the game because Esc only opens the Backpack! ..so had to Alt-F4 and go find GameUserSettings.ini to clear the changes.


To summarise, the behaviour I expected was:

- The game allows Tab to be bound to any action, or at least locks its bind so as not to lose use of it altogether if it gets unbound.

- Esc backs out of a waiting-for-input keybind.

- Imho, Esc should be reserved and locked as the system menu key so that people like me can't get themselves into a mess ;) but others might disagree.

(Edit: for anyone trying to do the same thing there is a workaround - rebind Catalogue to the key that's already bound to the action you want to be on Tab, and Tab will swap over without needing to press it as input.)

I found this post and one from 2019. This continues to be an issue and if you already cleared the TAB binding you can't get it back

For the issue with rebinding of ESC, there is a work-around: You can get back into the game menu by pressing F1, which opens the Astropedia. Then you can use the mouse to navigate to the keyboard settings.
