ASTRONEER
Astroneer Crash at startup due to .mp4 System Era and UE startup video (workaround)
So Astroneer is crashing right after the system Era and UE videos. I have a workaround for you:

workaround for the game crashing at startup:

if you go to the steamapps/astroneer directory

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ASTRONEER Early Access\Astro\Content\Movies

remove (or move to a temp dir) the following files: legal*.mp4 loading*.mp4 seslogo*.mp4. Now run the game and it does not crash!! (Asterisk is a wild card, there is a movie for each resolution for ex: seslogo*.mp4 seslogo1080p)

You can literally just delete all of them. No need to remove the 3 movies (Anomoly, Computer Screen, Gate Unlock), though. If something gets messed up, you can always verify the files and Steam will redownloaded them. Ergo, you can't mess up.

It works! Thank you!

I just moved the files to a new dir.
Astroneer Version v1.0.7 appears to have corrected the issue. In Steam I performed a repair (restores missing movies) and now the game starts runs the video and displays main menu as expected.
Nice find. I found a similar bug in another game a few years ago, where the intro video would cause the game to freeze. I should have thought of checking that with this game sooner.

Tested all videos and they work just fine, so it looks like it's the video player they use, to play various animations throughout the game, including the loading screen, that's causing both the memory leak and lag. Get rid of the videos and there's nothing to play, and nothing that can cause it to fail.

It's a temporary fix, but at least we now know how to get around the bug.

The bug came with 1.0.7, so you'll find that it'll happen sooner or later, if you use that version.
Thanks a lot for your tip. I also had an issue where I couldn't load my savegame anymore. By deleting those files I've finally been able to load my savegame. Thanks a lot once again !!! :steamhappy:
Thank you very much Arconaute, this helped a lot! :steamhappy:
I deleted the loading screens and it works it just took a little while

this was only an issue with 1.0.7. The latest version 1.2.9 should not have this issue. I recommend making sure you have the latest update. Also: Killing the steam process and restarting can sometimes get the update to push through.

Ok I will do that thank you arconaute
