Digging/Terrain in multiplayer is out of sync
Summary:
Digging in multiplayer is out of sync

Description:
As others reported, digging in multiplayer goes out of sync. For our 2 player run we noticed that still on the first planet. Noticed it massively after I broke through the mantle.

What I want to point out is: this is not just going out of sync over time because of network issues. The game state seems to be transmitted wrong to the client just when joining the game. It feels like the savegame actually includes different realities for each player.

After noticing out of sync issues early on the second planet we tried:

- host quitting the game (save & back to menu) while client was still connected. Host loads game, client joins
- as above, but both players quitting the game after save & back to menu
- host stays in game, client leaves and quits game, client joins again

For all these scenarios the out of sync areas stayed out of sync.
When the client left and the host remained ingame, the host build a terrain structure by adding and removing terrain. The structure was visible to the client when he rejoined, although we didnt verify whether the structure was exactly the same, but the client recognized the distinct object that was shaped.

This means that out of sync terrain is a persistent error.
Something is seriously broken, if the game state just after reloading a game will get transmitted consistently incorrect. Right now this makes decent multiplayer impossible.

As you usually remove way more terrain in this game than adding terrain: Maybe the game state could be halted and saved when a player joins and then be used as a base line for all players? Or this could be used for debugging.

I also notice this a lot when playing 2 player co-op with my friend. Open areas in caves (natural, not excavated) on my client will occasionally be inside solid rock on friends client, or vice versa. Restarting both clients makes no difference. Is it possible the random terrain generation system is giving slightly different results on different machines maybe?

Been having this problem for months with two of my friends.

It starts happening as early as the initial new game startup. Any modifications we make to the terrain often doesn't match up between any of our clients, and often regenerates itself as we're trying to modify the terrain. Usually resulting in one of us dying.

Doesn't matter who's hosting either.

It really sucks because we all really want to play this game, but the terrain issue makes doing so impossible.

With me and a friend we played about a few months from when we last played and had this issue looked in the notes and saw that it said it was fixed but surprise it wasn't. My friend saw me go into a tunnel on my end about 4 layers down then he saw me go into the ground they shared screens and did see a cave to the side of where we were on his end not mine but did look somewhat the same. Also this post was before the newset update yet after the update no change it seems...

Same here, terrain is really buggy for my friend when we play. Suddenly the tunnel she dug just cancel and she's stuck midground. I'm the host and terrain is fine for me though. Can we expect a answer from developers ?

I hope indeed that this issue is high on the priority list for bug fixing. This game is a lot of fun with friends, but as you noticed too, it is currently not feasible.

I encountered this issue yesterday with my friend, we were just the two of us playing, me being the host. This issue is still there.
