But have your friends tried it as well?
If your friends don't follow those steps, we won't progress here.
Simple steps, you can do this with all multiplayer games when you have these issues.
First, check your cables and hardware.
Switch off pc. Disconnect all ethernet cables and reconnect.
Switch on pc. Reset Router to Isp.
Uninstall game. Disable Firewall. Reinstall Game, Enable firewall. Run game, alt tab to desktop and you should see a popup ask for you to allow remote access to public networks. Select Yes and Accept.
If you don't and know how to manually add a firewall exception you can do that. If your firewall is already listing exceptions, delete them. Disable firewall, run game, enable firewall and wait for popup, enable access and accept.
The Host and all clients need to do this.
If your firewall has no exceptions and does not issue a popup.. then your firewall is broken. You need to reinstall it.
Firewalls are usually broken by users messing around with them. Rarely by windows patches.
Once everyone has ensured their hardware/software is working correctly.
Host launch game. On planetfall, Host Exit Habitat, Enter Habitat, Exit Habitat. Then invite clients to join.
And it should work.
If it still doesn't work at this point, then the cause is outside of microsofts or ses's ability to fix. Most likely scenario is you're just too far from each other. If you know you're physically local to each other, can usually connect in other games etc. It could be a time restrained issue, if you can connect say via skype.. or to discord, but not to the game, it could be a local network issue, datacenter offline etc.. maintenance, a line fault. These are temp issues.
Otherwise there are not legit reasons for it to fail. Outside of User Fault.
It sounds like, if it happened a few patches ago, that your game didn't update properly, possibly the last windows update didn't go through properly. Can your friends connect to each other? ie is it only you that can't host/join anyone else?
If you have an issue on 1 pc.. then the issue is within that pc. But if as you say you installed to a different pc, then the issue must be within your home network. Which in most cases, means your router, potentially hardware inbetween.
If you have no issues with other games, then.. well, I can't really say, either you're not telling the whole truth.. or you have a very unique and specific bug.
Depending on how computer aware you are, you could try resetting windows, prior to this, try uninstalling/reinstalling all your Redistributables.. reinstall steam.. everything and anything that's in the line between Astroneer and the internet essentially. Which is pretty much, Astroneer, Firewalls, Antivirus, Steam, Windows itself and your router and it's internal firewall.
You could also try, going into Windows defender, Virus and Threat protection, V&T Protection settings, and the top most slider, move to off. To disable Realtime Protection. Just remember to switch it back on afterwards. And before you browse any websites.
Seems more like recent update crap, than local networking issues.
