Depending on how taxing your custom game settings get, e.g. more biomes with dense vegetation, you may eventually want to lower some of the quality settings.
I was pleasantly surprised when I loaded the game up the next day and realized that I could run it without any issues on max setting. Very nice. It looks so good compared to when I last played it. And it runs super smooth.
My problem now is the controls and the UI. I'm also playing Subnautica and No Man's Sky right now and coming to this game can be a pain after playing either of those. Something about the controls that gives me a headache. I need a reticle pasted in the center of the screen and this game doesn't seem to have that.
I also couldn't figure out how to work the UI since there wasn't a mouse cursor present when I open a panel. Turns out that I needed to change a setting (Hold to Orbit) and that seemed to help but the UI still gives me headaches just like the controls do.
I really want to play this game but this is my 3rd attempt and it just might not be for me. That's ok but damn if it doesn't suck.
