There is SESHARDCORE (or something like that) which is a pre-configured Custom Game setting. With this game mode you start on the most dangerous planet, and getting resources is more difficult also. You use oxygen quicker. I can't remember if it changes other settings. It is hard mode. If you die, you're dead. No respawns. And it's easy to die from lack of oxygen, falls, and environmental hazards. It's not really hard for an experienced player if you're careful, but I wouldn't have wanted to try it my first game or two.

You can select seshardcore and then modify the settings to make it more or less difficult. Like you could limit to 3 respawns or something. Or just setup your own custom game. Or there is the normal game mode, which I think is better for learning the game.

The custom game that is labeled hardcore starts off in the regular Sylvan, but without a shelter and if you die it will end the game. There are a few harder custom games that they made that have you starting elsewhere with other modifications. Once you get used to the game and know how everything works you can play with custom games, either the ones they made or create your own. There is also creative mode that will allow you to build everything and play with it if you want to learn what everything does without experiencing it in your regular game.
