The storage being shredded will give you back the same amount of scrap that the item would have taken to make. So while your emotionally scarred, you haven't really lost anything. It is annoying though. In regards to canisters losing what they contain though you are right. When a non-canister storage or platform, or anything with attachment slots gets shredded anything attached to it gets popped off. Stuff INSIDE a canister have no time to escape and you can hear the resource's souls being devoured by the demon shredder.
However if its an ore based item like the medium silo, then yes, they'd have received enough scrap to re-buy the titanium and remake the silo.
