The Missions Ruin The Game
They really need to stop giving everything as rewards - maybe just bytes or really nothing at all, just keep them as objectives to guide some players along.

I played the game for many hours and there was just something unintuitive about it and ZERO sense of accomplishment. With the the rewards and the events you end up getting a trade tower so early that you have almost no need to go to another planet. That CAN'T be the purpose of the game. I know its a casual sandbox and you make your own goals, but it has to be FUN. I found myself not getting research items that I instinctively wanted because I felt I'd be wasting time/resources not knowing if the dumb missions were just going to give it all to me. I felt like half of the lower end stuff I never needed or used.

So, I started up a new game and completely ignored the missions and never collected a reward. OMG, there it is, that feeling that what I was doing had purpose and meaning...accomplishment. Oh, I actually need oxygen filters now, since I don't have an oxygenator and tethers won't work...boy, those first runs into the caverns certainly changed.

Funny thing is you end up doing all the same things as the missions ask you to, you just feel more in control and your actions feel more meaningful, not cheapened by rewards.

Is it just me?

no, I did the mission tree to see the story/end stuff, but 99% of the time I play on saves that ignore missions entirely. The missions drive the story, but they ruin the sandbox and make it feel linear and sad. If they presented the missions differently and didn't give you a ton of mini rtgs it wouldn't break immersion so bad. I get bored doing missions after maybe an hour, but I can lose a whole day just derping around and exploring. I don't know why a casual sandbox game would ever want you to feel like you finished it, counterintuitive af especially since they have a shop full of things to buy. It's like if walmart told you one day how much money you had spent with their company over your lifetime, you'd just think "oh, now I feel like I should stop coming here and start buying stuff other places"

I did missions on my first play-through and before I even finished them all I decided to restart because the game was just way too easy for my liking. It almost felt like an extended tutorial with all the free stuff they shower you with.

I discovered the custom game settings too and altered some things to make the game harder, like fewer resources and making research more expensive etc... I'm still following the missions, but I refuse to accept any rewards for them I just leave them in the 'completed but not collected' state. I made a few exceptions for missions that give you schematics you can't unlock normally, but any reward items I was forced to take went straight to the shredder.

Honestly I feel like this game undermines a lot of its own mechanics. Why search for resources and mine them when any patch of dirt can be converted into any resource you want? Why build a complex wind and solar array when you can just RTG for free unlimited power? etc etc...

Yeah as someone who hasnt played the game for that long I still agree much with this last paragraph. I play other games now but I feel like this is the reason why, I just didnt want to admit it to myself.

Edit: 60h apparently

I really like the missions.
I like the idea of unlocking more advanced stuff via mission/mission chains.

Like with the Hoverboard.

I like the missions in general, but some of them are just too stupidly tedious and I typically avoid them, like the sun missions. These latest ones annoy me more. I don't like busy work for the sake of busy work. I have ignored them all before, but I like the little QT power sources.

Would you, perhaps say, they are "cute"?
