There's a third-party tool named AstroLauncher which should help you with managing and running your self-hosted dedicated server: https://github.com/ricky-davis/AstroLauncher#readme
If you are interested in why Astroneer Dedicated Server is the way it is, then I refer you to a Reddit posting by the main author of the previously mentioned tool, who provided some explanations. Please note that the links given at the end of that posting are somewhat outdated and partially superceeded by AstroLauncher's functionality.
I had been close to buying the game for me and my daughter and searched for dedicated server information. After reading half through the reddit posting about all of this Mickey-Mouse Soft / Trusted Server etc. BS i will stay the hell away from this game.
I do and did run Minecraft servers, 7 days to die servers, Valheim servers. All this servers run without any microsoft trusted BS. You do a steam client install, install and config the dedicated server and youre good to go.
Microsoft, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up operating systems and games since the 90ties.....
But if i dont need to signup of a third party (microsoft?) account (?) to play coop i might consider this.
Is there a solution?
