Ah, so an old thing I used to do was use the scrap / trader route to just no brain a lot of the progression and I noticed I can't actually build that trading outpost.. thing anymore without some new resource? How does one acquire such a resource?

To print a Trade Platform, you need Iron, Tungsten, and an EXO Chip. The former two are explained in the resources info card available in the Astropedia. Press F1 to access that.

EXO Chips are found in EXO Caches (dark gray chests) which can be found randomly in the landscape (surface and underground). They have their own markers in the compass/radar (press R to access that). The caches can be opened using explosives, i.e. either dynamite or flora which shoots explosive projectiles.

Once you have a Trade Platform, EXO Chips can also be obtained in exchange for Astronium.
