You can even drive a rover down the large spires and get it right onto the core. I tunneled several large rovers right down to the spires and drove straight to the core. You can't seem to actually get the rover onto the central platform though, as gravity just won't pull it that way.
the gravity is weird in the core (also called a gateway engine) the large pillers that go out from the core are able to be walked on
(in-fact that is the best way to get to the core, just tunnel down till you find one/ get to the big hollow space and make a platform to one and walk "down" and continue useing the tether line to breath)
also if you have the right item (it depends on the planet) you can stick it into a slot and something will be made which if taken to the other side and placed in the slot will make a orb come out (like the ones you find in the weird purple surface things (also called gateway chambers)
you can use that orb to teleport to the surface chamber and back whenever you want
(the items needed for each engine i know of are as follows:the starting planet needs quartz, its moon needs zinc, the exotic planet needs Graphene and its moon needs silicone)
hope that helps (but you probly got past it or died by now so it probly did not)
I brought my rover down there with a giant ramp made from the surface the first time and even made a ramp for it to manipulate the gavity changes and drive into the core. Also if the canisters are empty while making ramps, why not just fill them nearby on the spot?
