Correct.
Tho explosives can be found occassionally in wrecks.
Loose Exo chips super rarely can be found in wrecks too but you'll faster find explosives than you'll find these.
As early game method? Yes.
You can also trade Astronium for Exo Chips but that's a late game method. (Since Astronium is within the planet's outer Core layer and is quite limited so best way to mine it is to use Auto Extractors)
Alternatively you use hostile plants that shoot explosives to open the Exo crates for you but it's risky and requires traveling to different planets than your starting one.
Astroneer is after all all about traveling to different planets and gathering / managing resources there.
Small and Medium Shuttles are cheap to build so is the Solid Thruster and it can take you to other planet and back.
So if you refuse to make explosives then you will have to deal with total RNG if you want your first Exo chip.
No you don't need a Hydrazine Thruster please read carefully what i wrote.
Here i've bolded the part of interest to make it easier for you.
No problem
Getting hydrogen requires an atmospheric condenser, you can't do this before leaving Sylva. At that point you might as well take advantage of hostile plants on Glacio or Atrox to blow up an EXO cache, which is much simpler and costs nothing.
Finding dynamite in wreckage on Sylva has not been an issue for me though, I have more than I know what to do with.
