How to get beacons to stay lit?

My game inconsistently turns on/off beacons on my astroneer and vehicles when I start the game. The only beacon that stays powered on every time is one that is sitting on a platform at my base. If I turn my beacons on and then exit and restart the game most will be switched off again. Is there a logic to how the beacons work that I'm missing?
I've lost a rover train and an astroneer well stocked with research items that I would be able to find if the beacons were still lit but alas its just one duff tractor by the first obelisk I found that stays powered on permanently.

AFAIK beacons only work when they're deployed, ie placed on the ground.

Yeah, beacons placed on storage racks won't be lit by default.

The only exception to that is if you place a beacon directly on the bumper of a rover. That is necessary now since they removed the natural beacon from vehicles.

That all seems rather arbitrary and little self-defeating but it does explain the duff tractor's resilience.

Beacons are pretty useless. Their range is so short, by the time they show up, you already know where something is

I wouldn't say they are useless. They've provided me some much needed direction when I've done some small jaunts in a local area. Plus they are visible from orbit, which is probably the best use of them overall.

The higher up you place your beacons, the farther you can see them. If you are leaving a 'bread crumb' trail of beacons while you cross the globe, put them on mountain tops rather than on valley floors. It does make a distance.
