what system do you play astroneer on? building computer to spec, need real world reference
I am wanting to spec build a low budget system specifically for astroneer, so I am hoping for some specific feedback of real-world performance. Thanks in advance for any feedback, im trying to get as many people as possible access to this game without going to console, no shame, just function.

what computer specs
what resolution and settings
what kind of framrates do you get
is your gameplay pretty smooth?

I prefer all responses be in format, on topic please and definitely no spec shaming, though I doubt that would be an issue.

I would like this to be just responses to this question please, no discussion but feel free to add details to your own response

I'll start for format sake:

CPU: FX-6300 @ 4.3GHz
Motherboard: m5a97 evo2 M51BC
Memory: 16GB DDR3 RAM (8+0+4+4)
Hard drive game runs on: 240GB SSD
graphics: radeon R9 270

I overclock my GPU and CPU moderately, please mention if you do, values not required but helpful

I play at 1080 resolution
running around my base for benchmarks (its the most stressing gameplay ive personally seen the game put on my hardware)
Vsynch off

on ultra settings I get 30-40 FPS
on medium settings I get 50-60 FPS

Memory: 2x4GB RAM
Hard Drive game runs on: 500GB HDD
graphics: GT 710

800X600 resolution
all low settings
Vsynch off
18-24 FPS

if i understand you correctly you already have a puter that runs it at 30-40 fps and you want to build another low budget just to run it? well ok, if it was me i'd go on craigslist or other online seller or to a used computer or computer repair store and ask them what old computers they got laying around and let me download one smallish game and let me see if it runs or at least look up the specs for the machine and astroneer and see if they are above minimum.

As I said, its not for me, and two setups doesnt help decide between every part on the market, hence the need for feedback. This is partly why I asked for no discussion, it doesnt help me, but thank you for suggestions anyway.

i5-6400. 16 gb ram. 1060 6 gb. No ssd. Pretty smooth!

CPU: i5-4690k @ 3.5 ghz
RAM: 16gb ddr3
Disk: Non-SSD
Graphics: R9 290
1920x1080
Nothing overclocked.
Runs smooth as ♥♥♥♥. Everything maxed out gets 30 fps. I don't think this game is very demanding in specs, especially if you are okay with toning it down.

I broke down and purchased an ALienware laptop 15 inch. I did this because I wanted to get into VR. However I ended up adding a graphics amplifier box and with a desktop video card. But alone the Alienware does a great job and I am getting 75FPS with the latest version of Astroneer

if i was going to build a system to just play this game i would be looking at AMD apu's the r3's are vega powered and from the little ive seen of them quit good for what they are and the price.. heres a link to pcworld talking about who should buy it. https://www.pcworld.com/article/3255012/computers/who-should-buy-a-ryzen-apu-and-who-shouldnt.html

the new ryzen chips are coming but who knows when and i dont know how soon you want to build it.

The Ryzen 5 2600 is a fantastic gaming cpu. One of the best. Its pretty cheap too.

Processor - AMD Phenom 8450 Triple Core
Motherboard - AMD Agesa
Memory - Kingston 4GB DDR2
Gaming Drive - PNY XLR8 240GB SSD
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 4GB 1050 Ti

With everything set to ultra it runs very smoothly at around 25FPS
I don't notice enough of a difference overclocking to bother with it.

Lil Puppy Jan 17, 2019 @ 4:26pm
AMD Phenom X6 1090T black edition 3.2-3.4ghz
AMD Radeon RX 580 8gb
Asus Crosshair IV Formula (AM3)
Crucial 12gb 1333 ddr3
64gb Sandisk Extreme USB3 flash drive ;)
1080p @ 100fps vsync off
Performance degrades over time in this game so I can go as low as 20fps after a while... But a fresh landing on an untouched world gets me ~120fps. Staring at the sky from the drop pod gets me 160fps, ground gets me 100fps, walk around loading things for about 30 seconds and I'm down to 95fps.

Most of my components are a decade old. The graphics card is new. And the read speeds on the flash drive are higher than my regular sata II 6gb physical hard drives.

awesome, thank for the help everyone! It looks like a great span of hardware, very helpful. Definitely open to more input, but it seems like there is a little bit of wiggle room on the min specs for those of us who dont mind the lower FPS. If anyone wants to add, that could certainly increase the resolution (bad pun) of my data

I would ignore everyone specs and performance reports here. reason being a major update is scheduled for Feb 6, which is almost here. there will be new content and new performance optimizations, so it may run better or worse on some systems than it does now.

im very curious what, if any, new options there will be in settings for user customizable performance. for example, an option for view distance/ground clutter draw distance would be nice. some people need it down pretty low to run, while others who have the hardware for it might want to crank it to max. im not sure if we will know what options there are until it releases. but these could make it much more flexible on min spec vs max quality.

I thought about that, but I wanted some baseline under the assumption that the update will not alienate older hardware that ran the EA version, and the basic engine of the game will be similar enough if not the same. Thanks for looking out though
Yeah I don't think it'll change much, it wouldn't make sense for it to not run on machines that carried through early access. If anything, it would change for the better because of optimizations.
