I am lost - cannot find home base
Is there a way to search for the home base? The home icon is not visible anymore

And so began his many years wandering in the wilderness.

It is really easy to go around in circles and I found the compass useless because the planets are so small.

There was a tip posted a while ago to use the band of stars to help you travel in a straight line.

Before venturing out, first decide which cardinal direction to go in, then stick to it so you can find the way home. Some tricks are: making a pillar every so often to use as a landmark; use beacons the same way and place them on the highest point you can; generally, try to remember natural landmarks like mountains forests and gorges as you pass by them.

Driving around in caves is super treacherous because not only can you get lost, you also can fall, get stuck and its way harder to avoid obstacles (beacons are nearly useless underground too). Its a reliable source of oxygen though and the buggy is fast and maneuverable enough to handle it. Tractors are cool too because they're small and can mount a drill head for quick digging. Same rules as above: just dig straight through anything that gets in the way. If you fall down a cliff and survive don't panic, just make a pillar as an elevator back to the opening you fell through and make a ramp down to recover.

For your current problem, I'd suggest building a small outpost where you first realized you were lost, then work your way back using my navigation tricks.

Thanks.

ewanc is right.

If you use pillars now you'll at least know if you're going in circles.

do the stars still work? I just use the compass and stars. works better if you check before you leave for a reference point, but 99% of the time I start right on the equator which the stars band mimics. unless they changed all that, it makes navigation really easy. you may have to practice it but once you do, youll never get lost again. or you can go the lazy route and use beacons. In the early access, I used to make "rings" of beacons like a target sign with my base in the bullseye.

All sound like good ideas

It would be cool if the game included a planetary map.

Doesn't your home base have a beacon? Even if you go far away, if you've tethered to your base you should find it again.

I was using a vehicle which required no tethers. Went too far that I cannot see the beacon already.

Well, then I'm not 100% sure what to tell you. If you went far enough away to the point where you can't see the home icon, and you just went in any old direction [Or you don't remember how you got there] Your only option is to keep driving around until you stumble upon a Gateway, activate it, and pray you have a Gateway open near your base. You'll have to ditch your vehicle, but it can be fetched later [Assuming you figure out a way back from that spot.] Either that, or you could try building a rocket, and landing near your home base, but the Gateway one is preferred. If you can't do either option [Didn't bring power with you, not enough resources, etc.] Then my best suggestion is to restart. I've gotten lost while driving before for similar reasons as you, and that's why I prefer tethering to somewhere first before driving over there. Prevents me from getting lost most of the time. Especially since they glow at night.

Start building towers/giant arrows out of terrain. Choose a direction to point to or from. As you drive around aimlessly you will at least know if you’re going round in circles. Big help, right? :-)

Sadly I gave up and started a new game

But if you die you return to base anyway.

Usually if I get lost I just try to keep moving and keep an eye on the horizon to find the base beacon. Sometimes it takes a bit but it hasn't failed me yet.:steamhappy:
