If you spam clicks every little bit of distance it'll... more or less be aligned so that you won't notice it being odd otherwise.
* you may want to have few cans of soil in your backpack before you start
* remove all obstacles from ground you going to smooth
* raise camera above you, pointed down
* have camera on minimal zoom so you can see more surface
* create place with desired altitude and smooth surface starting from it
* make quick circles around area you going to smooth until it looks good
* keep camera pointed down or it will be uneven
not fun and makes curve bumpy and inaccurate eventually anyway
Don't turn the alignment mod off and on. Make a small reference spot with the alignment mod, then turn it off (permanently), and use the normal smoothing function of the terrain tool to make a flat area as large as you want.
It's funny, if it worked the other way, if it flattened conforming to planets' curvature, these ♥♥♥♥♥♥' people would be complaining that it doesn't create flat planes. Ideally it would do both with a toggle, or maybe we could have a second mod that flattens to curvature.
But good luck getting the ragtag crew of SE interns and new hires and marketing staff practicing/interviewing on Astro to create anything useful for the game.
What with all the staggeringly underwhelming "major" content updates this year, I don't blame you.
