we need space snails
what if they had resources on thier backs or you could ride them

Uhm yeah and leave a gawd awful mess of slime trails everywhere they go. Walking along and hearing as well as feeling that gut clenching moment when you step on an unseen snail... crunch... squish! It's horrible! Don't even get me started on slugs and bare feet. Aargh!

I like snails and slugs tho. Those little beady eyestalks, never know if they're staring at you or just minding their own business.
Actually.. that could be a fun addition to the game, great suggestion!!
Make the slime trails sticky.. slowing your astroneer down for a few seconds..
And that he shouldn't be modelling as a Snail.
Also the name doesn't quite sit right.. Joe the Space Snail.. dunno.. maybe Fred the Space Snail sounds better.. could he maybe change his name?
I was thinking also, functionality.. maybe snails could be outfitted with a mobile module. Onto which other modules could be fitted. ie This would give the Astroneer a mobile home. If fitted with a habitat module. Or a mobile Research Station.. The module would also come with a connector, so you could pick him up and put him on a spaceship. Foot facing outwards.
As for Snail Habitat & Location, possibly lives only on an Arid World, in damp caverns surrounded by Gas Bag Plants or Spikers. The Astroneer would need to find a snail first and then tame him over a period of 25 ingame hours, by passively feeding him with research seeds. Which would have to be placed in the last slot of the backpack.
Expressions:
Default expression, would be with his head slightly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to one side, with a vacant cross-eyed appearance or set to his face. Maybe some drool running from the lower corner of his mouth.
After Feeding, A rapturous grin, where the end of each side of the snails mouth, curved around into an almost demonic smile. With small teeth jutting out at odd angles.
If left to his own devices, the snail takes on a bored expression, eye stalks drooped, one dragging along the ground. Maybe his tongue lolling out to one side.
Behaviours:
If the snail is escorting the Astroneer and the Astroneer dies, the Snail will slowly eat his corpse. Depending on speed by which the Astroneer returns, items may be permenantly lost due to being partially eaten. Thus a small death penalty, for daring to die.
In general, the snail would move erratically, even if on follow, it will stop whenever it comes into proximity with a research seed buried under a plant. Thus snails could be typically used to locate and sniff out buried rare seeds.
In a fight or fright stance, the snail will alway's attempt to leg it away.. however, due to it's natural speed limitation, it will always fail at this. If the snail dies. A small gravestone will be erected at place of death, with the immortal words stencilled onto it saying.
"Git Gud"
