I second this. For this very reason I have both the Steam edition and Gamepass/Microsoft store edition to join my friends worlds.

Renting a server from Nitrado or Gportal appears to be the only way for Xbox and Steam versions to play together at the moment, I hope this changes in the future. My personal theory is that Microsoft doesn't like the idea of Xbox Ecosystem players jumping on home-run servers (but that's just a theory) whereas Playstation players can a supposedly join on any Astroneer server self-run or otherwise.
