ASTRONEER
The mining drill
Is there a point to this besides the other planets where you cant mine without the drill? I figured it would be faster than the hand held, but It takes 2-3 times as long to mine with it, I get that it drops the mined material directly onto a the onboard storage but it is faster for me to mine it by hand then place the items on the racks, am I missing something?

I haven't tested the direct connection to the extracter before, but I usually pile 8 canisters on my backpack, a small generator, a boost mod and wide mod, slide down a hole next to the base to my secret megaquarry, vaccume the earth for 60 seconds, return to base and dump soil load.

Thayt's how I start out, but eventually the quarry gets too big so the dirt is too far away. No big deal for small jobs like a rover or new table, but when you want to make a few medium batteries, it helps to shorten the process a little and be able to start a new quarry anywhere without making and running a bunch of new tethers. Casual players may never really benefit from the investment of 4 copper, 5 aluminum, a resin and any new things you might have to make for power and storage.
If you are wanting to create a large space, you could put the drill and a large storage on an XL platform, 8 slots around the sides and space for up to 32 canisters on the storage.

Have another platform or a rover with the extractor on so you can load up those canisters easily.

Using a drill platform instead of a rover means you can mine equally with the max crane distance givng you a radius without fear of the platform moving.

The space needed for the XL platform is also wide enough to make a path for your large rover, just pick up the entire platform and move it to the wall to continue mining out a tunnel.

Or if you stay in just one place, you can empty a sphere of space inside a mountain for you to thruster around in your rover :)

I noticed in some situations the rover moves while drilling; this is a good idea of putting the crane on a platform
