Canisters everywhere, clutter
I have a large rover train with a ex large shredder. Its covered with medium sized canisters for soil and elements. I've got a diamond drill. When I go driving through the planet things aren't always getting picked up. Sometimes its easier to do the mining myself. I get back to the base and things aren't automated yet. Its kind of a huge job to move all these canisters and process the contents, decide what to make. I put everything into canisters. At first this cleaned up a lot of clutter, but now there are lots of canisters and unlike the elements they all look the same except for the small hologram and the text which is kind of slow to read.

I'm trying to flatten a large area. i get it pretty flat but not perfectly. The way the canisters work is um, interesting. They can be frustrating. I don't know how many times I've picked up the whole soil centrifuge to prevent it from being sucked into the wrong canister. I get sick of looking for an empty canister in a forest of canisters. I guess some of this could be solved by building the biggest canisters. Solved for awhile anyway.

Factorio handled a lot of this better because you had belts automatically bringing things here and there right at the beginning. They kept it interesting by giving you trains with complicated signaling to learn. And they gave you the godmode view instead of being on the ground looking at all these tall things and trying to see stuff in the back that obscured by things up front.

Its a much better looking game, but you don't need automation as much. They don't make it worth all the trouble or do they?

How am I supposed to do it?

i mean eventually you should get the large canister, if you got an excess of materials of certain types, a good way to clean it up is to simply print objects that only use that material, and then dump the object you didnt need into the shredder to convert it to scrap. scrap is easier to store and can become most anything the soil centrifuge cannot produce. result, you'll only need canisters for scrap back at base and maybe 1 for each element. this will tidy up any base.
It seems like they should have some huge project that requires you to gather and store tons of stuff. That would justify automation.

It would also be better if you could build more complicated stuff than a flat surface with the terrain modification tool

i mean you can, its just a real challenge to do so with the tools we are given.

Canisters are not good at receiving heavy streams of resources. You should put a medium silo on the rover to buffer the resource nuggets. The canisters will pick them up from there. Please let me know here how that works for you.
Wow. You sound like a caring individual. Impressive, i will honor your request (if I play again soon) Thanks

From my experience one or two small storages are enough to buffer the stream of nuggets.

He's probably not wanting to collect every type of resource. So you need the extra space a silo has to hold onto the undesireable nuggets until you exit the seat and manually pick off the chaff.
