A large shuttle is the best way to go between planets, because you can haul huge amounts of stuff (especially with 2 large silo B's), for a pittance of hydrazine. And, shuttles are faster now that you can launch to another planet with one keystroke plus two clicks.
You have to unlock gateways to "complete" the game and get all the achievements, but aside from that, they don't provide much gameplay benefit
I see, such a shame. It'd be cool if everything on the platform came with you. It'd have much more functionality then. I feel like it's useless considering how annoying it was to unlock.
Try timing gateway travel and shuttle travel. Pretty much the same. The shuttle (with hydrazine thruster) uses only a quarter of a hydrazine canister per interplanetary flight, regardless of how much stuff is in the shuttle. If you have ammonium and hydrogen, it takes 8 seconds to make a hydrazine canister. If you need to transport more than a dozen items, the shuttle is way quicker. You can carry over 800 nuggets on a large shuttle.
What's even faster, if you need e.g. a few nuggets of tungsten, is a trade platform.
overall i think in solo gateways see the least use, playing with friends its a fast way for them to move between you and whatever they might be doing on another world. without having to fire a rocket to do so.
My bases are setup next to a gateway, they are built with alot of redundancy, allowing for rovers, shuttles, gateway use, production and storage
if I die, it just makes it that much easier to respawn and few clicks later, im at a base for resupply
If im transporting a few items ie nanocarbon alloy for rtg, or a few cans of gas(each is 5 uses), since my base setup is next to the gates, its almost fast travel without hunting for where I last left my shuttle, or before resetting a shuttle location before the next death.
If im transporting a lot of items, then I package everything, load silos, and use a shuttle, with the point being to using as few trips as possible.
If I setup a base off the path, ie not near a gate, then a shuttle would be the only way to get to that particular base (or a long trip via rover)
Looking back, I use 2-3 large shuttle trips packed with crates to build a self sustaining base at a primary planet location, if a gate is active then I use the gate to ferry smaller loads between bases, and back to a shuttle when production quota has been met/exceeded and transfer bulk materials to the rest of my bases
One more example, during the holiday festivities, I was at my Atrox base, gated to Sylva for some supplies, gated to Glacio , setup my rover for the event, and away I went for the items, once completed, reset my rover to a standard loadout, gated back to Sylva with a few deco items, ready for the next adventure.
Funny thing is, I have made multiple playthroughs, and played different ways, and always, always end up with too large a file, some with lots of small bases, most with very large bases, but all of it fun, so in closing, enjoy the game with all of its mechanics.
