Report a translation problem
If you're using tethers you have to be careful not to fall when you hit a new cave system. There are five cave layers before you hit the core. Watching this might help.

That said, the closer you get to the core, the less gravity effects you, so the more you float, the closer you are.
Also, you can get tricked. If your digging a ramp, and then that ramp seems to gradually straightens out you've likely passed over the core.
If your really having a bad time, you could always just put the terrain tool under your feet and dig straight down, get to the core, and then dig yourself a ramp to get out.
