Best way to get a large rover back to the surface?
Currently stuck very near the planetary core and can't seem to drill upwards as there legit isn't enough...earth to dig through and I keep plummeting back down to the thin layer of earth just before breaking through to the core.

Drilling down the core was 80% free-falling and the other 20% drilling so there is no path back up that I took to get down...

I'd really rather not waste a half hour or more building a ramp up to the top of this giant cavern with the terrain tool, but it is looking like I have no choice. I could just take the core warp back to the surface but I don't want to leave my rover behind.

Repack whatever is on it, those things should fit in your backpack.
The large rover is an issue though, you may just leave it there as an O2 supply.
If the 'feature' still works though, you can repack it, HOLD IT while dying, and it might respawn you at the base with it. I don't know if the large things will work though. I think it only worked with things that you could hold in your hands (medium).

Otherwise you get to make a path back to the surface, it's probably easier to make a new one.

I had exactly the same problem. I decided to dig down with a tether line roughly following the original drill holes. Some major earthworks were required to get better gradients. I also took a tractor for safety. It was fun. I enjoy making roads. Having said that, getting continuity with the gradient is extremely difficult when you're doing any kind of turn. They need a smoothing tool, like the blur tool in Photoshop to average out the triangles. So you make a quick job of it and then go back over the road making all the rough bits smooth out. Now, that would be fun!

Enabling neat jobs on terrain manipulation just seems like such a no brainer to me - it should be a high priority (once they fix the bugs, lol).

Not sure if this is patched out...Winch.
Hook the vehicle with winch. Astronaut carry the winch and drag the rover out. You still need to widen some corridors.
Due to weird physic, astronaut carried winch is insanely strong, very much stronger than when mounted on vehicle. The line still snaps if item in tow got stuck.
You can get oxygen from vehicle, so just focus on building a ramp enough for astronaut to climb out.

You don't even need to carry a winch, power a trailer or tractor, stick the winch on it and hook yourself with it, free oxygen forever.

There is your problem. U could try to dig a path upwards, but its gonna be a pain in the ass. Best thing u could do is start digging with a friend. Get a massive rover with rtvs and the drillarm with drill. Also put a oxygen generator on it.First start digging and creating a path manually with widemod or boostmod. Either 2 people digging or 1 digs and the other moves digger and tethers. With the oxygen generator u can place tethers from the rover...so u dont have to move it everytime. It also gives u energy over the rover so u can keep using mods on the terrain tool.

A path back up is really important if u ever wanna retrieve that rover. Another idea is to get on the core with the rover. There are 2 lines that directly connect to the core and lead outwards. U can get on on of those and start digging upwards towards surface. As far as i know it should lead all the way to the surface to another alien ship.

Build a ramp.

Start a tiny ramp, then while holding left control, extend that ramp upwards. Takes a little practice, but you will end up with a mirror smooth ramp that will go straight to the surface.

people mostly only use tractors for core diving vehicle, can be packed up and stored in backpack. I left a 3 car large rover train in the first core i dove to. now I just do it on foot, no rovers

Yeah, if I do end up drilling down again, I'll just leave the rover there. But the one I have now has an RTG on it and a bunch of other goodies.

Guess I need to start building a ramp...

A lot of people dont know about it but building a ramp is super fast and easy by holding down the control and just using a small bump or something to choose the right angle.

I rescued my rover from the core using the terrain tool from the surface to make a ramp back down to the core with tethers the whole way. I guess next time i wont drill straight down with the vehicle drill, i'll just make a ramp. in reality making the ramp is half the fun anyhow. and running tethers to the core will mean i wont have to rely on a vehicle or portable oxygenator .

why not? rovers are cheap.

I dont get the 'corpse run' mentality players have in this game. generally speaking, everything in the game is cheap and easy to build. wherever you lost something has some inherent danger, whereas the resources to build a new "whatever" probably do not. it will probably take more time, if anything to do a rescue as opposed to just making a new one.

i think it falls under the "sunk cost" fallacy. people just dont want to feel like they are "losing" something, and rescuing it is satisfying because it feels like everything worked out ok, but in reality rescuing it actually loses more than abandoning it.

Rescuing a vehicle is a challenge and gives the player a goal that relates to the real world, something the game lacks. It's a different kind of fun to crafting and resource collecting, and breaks up what can otherwise become tedious.
If I get stuck, I just use the terrain tool to make a ramp by holding control so it stays at a constant slope. If you have a repackager, that is a pretty good option too.

lol it does eventually have a break limit though as i found out, i was swingin a scrap rover around above my head and it eventually snapped off and went flying.
