Messy. That'd drive me bonkers.
I also think using the extra large platform B is simply cleaner. Looks more professional than a dome littered with a bunch of bunch of random small objects.
EDIT: Correction - extra large storage still needs to an extra large platform A to be mounted, so it's still pretty resource hungry since Iron is harder to get than Resin.
typically i use storage for production facilities and fuel using platforms to keep things well automated.
now if only i could get a soil seperator, and a smelter along with some storage on the same platform i could automate some carbon production. but the best i can do is large C with them sitting next to eachother and moving them by hand.
Now I just have to find some holes to put them in...
The Extra Large Storage costs 2 iron and 2 steel, which requires 1 iron, 1 carbon and argon to produce. It can only be placed down on a Extra Large Platform A, which costs 4 iron, and takes up the entire platform. Additionally, it costs 5000 bytes to unlock the Platform and Storage unit, The total cost of this setup is 8 iron, 2 carbon and 1 tank of argon, which is equivalent to 13 scrap, plus a tank of Argon. This gives you a grand total of 31 tier 1 slots, with no flexibility and terrible ergonomics (you have to individually place and remove every single item by hand, and the layout makes this difficult).
The other late game storage option, the Extra Large Platform B, costs 2 iron and 2 resin to craft, and 2000 bytes to research. It has 10 tier 2 slots, which are equivalent to 2 tier 1 slots, but can have Medium Storages installed to increases their capacity to 8 tier 1 slots. Assuming you install 2 Medium Storages, which cost 2 resin each, you end up with roughly 32 tier 2 slots, with nearly half of those being tier 2 slots. The total cost of this setup is 2 iron and 6 resin, equivalent to 6 scrap. It can, however, be fitted with up to 10 Medium Storages. This would give a grand total of 80 tier 1 slots, and costs 2 iron and 22 resin, equivalent to 14 scrap.
Both of these setups require materials from off world, however, it should be noted that the Extra Large Platform B only requires you to gather some Hematite from another planet, while the Extra Large Storage requires you to also gather Wolframite for the Chemistry Lab. Additionally, they are both only available in the mid to late game.
However, there are still more storage options that outclass the Extra Large Storage, and they can be built early game only using basic materials which can be made with a soil centrifuge.
A Large storage costs 3 ceramic to be built, and costs 2000 bytes to be built. It must be placed on a Large connector, with the cheapest option being the Large Platform A, which costs 2 resin. This setup gives 4 tier 2 slots, and if all 4 have Medium Storages installed, has a total of 32 tier 1 slots. This costs 3 ceramic and 10 resin, which is equivalent to 6.5 scrap, or 3.5 soil canisters. If you spend an additional 500 bytes to unlock the Large Platform B, which costs 3 resin (1 more than the A), you get 2 additional tier 2 slots, which if used for Medium Storages gives you a total of 48 tier 1 slots, at the slightly boosted price of 3 ceramic and 15 resin, equivalent to 10 scrap (though you'd actually have to spend 11 due to ceramic and resin being sold in sets of 2) or 4.75 soil canisters.
4 Medium Platform A's, which each cost 1 resin and have 1 tier 2 slot, equipped with Medium Storages, you get a total of 32 tier 1 slots, at the low low cost of 12 resin, equivalent to 6 scrap, or 3 soil canisters. This setup also requires absolutely no research.
It's worth noting that all of these setups (aside from the Extra Large Storage), use Medium Storages, which can be moved around with resources attached. This makes it really easy to organise these systems and move resources around a base, as placing a Medium Storage with the needed ingredients on a platform with a crafting device automatically fills the device, which makes bulk printing, smelting and processing really easy.
A hole in the ground costs nothing to research or build, and is equivalent to -1 or more soil canisters. It has a theoretical infinite capacity, and takes maybe 5-10 seconds to make with the terrain tool. The main downside is the complete lack of organisation, though this can be rectified by making different holes for different materials.
In case you're wondering, I really don't like the Extra Large Storage. It baffles me that the devs even included it.
TLDR: The Extra Large Storage is useless, as it is more expensive, has less storage, is less flexible and is less ergonomic than any of the other storage options.
