But, that being said, sometimes I do have to run around quite a while before I run into it. When 1.0 was released, they changed the way resources are dispersed about the different biomes: the resource deposits are much more irregularly placed so you will run across them less frequently on average, but the individual deposits will have a much higher density of resources in them... You may run across areas that have a bunch of different resources all clumped on top of each other, while other areas may be completely devoid of anything... It is just a lot more random overall, so you may have to run around searching for a while if you had bad luck with the world generator.
The other suggestion I have, is don't just use your eyes... Sometimes--and this is especially true for worlds that have a very irregular surface pattern, like the terran moon--the deposits can be entirely concealed by the ground, so you must pull out your terrain tool and move the cursor around to see if anything is under there... It will show a little icon if there is a resource buried underneath where the cursor is pointing. In my experience, resources on the moon are actually more abundant than I first assumed, it's just that some of the deposits are covered up completely so you can't see them without digging down.
Other than that though, if you are positive you have looked everywhere it could possibly be, and you are certain it doesn't exist.... I don't know if there is a way to fix that without regenerating the solar system completely, which means starting a new game. So it's up to you if you think you've reached that point or not.
yeah, that is actually a good idea... The EA version had a lot easier cave access openings already there, but now they don't really show up the same way and in the same frequency. But I've found that if you just start digging a ramp down at any random spot, you will end up running into a cave more likely than not. It is a lot easier than trying to find a path down that already exists.
