I've started 3 games since v1.0 and all had large debris around.
Yeah, RNG is a bit of a mess.
Scanning by hand gives about 1/3rd of what a research module will give you. Anything scanned by hand can be tossed in a research module for about 3x the data, minus all the energy needed to do it.
As for the debris, I have encountered clusters of base platforms (4 and more) side by side, in the deeper caves of the planets you can encounter even workstations on the platforms (most of the time broken though). 1.0.4 has more wrecks than any other previous version had, I only wish there was a way to salvage the bigger wrecks somehow.

Depends on what you had to do ultimately if it was worthwhile or not. Charge it ones are the easiest and most give an instant 300+ research credits. That to me is worth a small amount of effort.
