Tutorial, how to get the terrain tool?

I just purchased Astroneer and I'm messing with the tutorial. I've restarted it several times but I cannot pickup the terrain tool.
Anything I'm doing wrong?

No instructions at all. Thanks so much.

Have you got to the point where it tells you to pick it up, or are you just seeing on the ground and wanting it?

Sorry to sound lost but I got out of the ship and created the Tethers, then checked out the broken buggy. I grabbed the gear off the dead guy and looked around. I don't see anything else to do. I tried getting the tool thinking it was the next step.
There should be a list of things to do but I'm not seeing it.

I went into game and figured out the tool and how to use it, but yeah, I'd like to complete the tut.

It's not very long, it may be worth just restarting if you get stuck. But when you get to each step, stop and have a look around, there will be the next icon somewhere close by. Also read everything in the F1 guide and all the tooltips. There's not a whole lot of instruction throughout the game, so take in everything they do give you to help you figure stuff out.

In modern versions of the game the terrain tool seems to be available initially - just press E to activate it.
